Many web designers out there are still getting suckered into non-paying jobs. Those jobs that require “sweat equity,” “commission,” “profit sharing.” No matter what the spin is, web designers need to wise up and stop being suckered into this scam.
This cartoon is for those that want a “FREE” website in exchange for a web designer to ”add” a link on their website and say that they are going to get “FREE” exposure and tons of traffic. When web designers build your website, they always put “their” links at the bottom anyway since they are the ones that built your website. So you are not doing the web designers any favors! Freeloaders need to get a clue and pay for one!

What is with all of the freeloaders on Craigslist? There are an increasing number of companies and individuals looking for web designers who are trying to get something for nothing. You probably have seen them; those ads offering equity instead cash. This is about as bad as the anonymous comments that people make on blogs. Attention ALL web designers! We charge for our work. Do not get suckered into giving your work away for free.

Many people that I have been running into ask me to recommend a staffing agency that recruits for food service industry. If you are in Hawaii, then Altres Staffing would be a good local staffing agency. They offer both staffing services where they assist the client company in finding suitable candidates. They also offer outsourced HR services that consists of employee leasing. Don Ho’s Island Grill in Aloha Tower Marketplace was one such company to use their services when they first opened back in 2000. They handled everything from recruiting the employees, interviewing, selecting, training, and processing their payroll.
Another company that might do a good job here is Kelly Services. If not, it’s probably best to contact a local staffing agency (vs some of the national). I don’t know of too many larger agencies that do food services.

While visiting my dad, I met a person at Holy Cross hospital who has a person whom she works with. This person is excellent in the core work she does, but has been having a lot of issues with interpersonal communication in a work environment.
She tends to be a rather stubborn person and has a hard time seeing other points of view. She is rather blunt in her word choice; for example, saying “You’re wrong,” as rather than “I believe that…”. Many people feel that she talks down to them.
We have discussed this problem on several occasions, and she acknowledges the issue at hand. She will be very good for awhile, but then slip into her old habits.
Outside of work (even at lunch) she is a very pleasant person. I think that self-confidence and work stress play a part in her behavior. I really want to turn this person around because her other skills are very valuable.
I was reading this book that might help with this problem. Crucial Conversations might be one option because their model requires a person to look at themselves and their own perceptions before they confront others with difficult communication, but it wouldn’t be good for general day-to-day communication. It sounds like a generic interpersonal communication course with an emphasis on istening skills is what’s needed.

Generation Xers are ahead of other generations when it comes to saving retirement, according to a study from financial firm Edwards Jones. The study shows that each generation has begun to save at a younger age. Sixty-eight percent of those surveyed between the ages of 25 and 34 say that they have already started to save for retirement, yet only 34 percent of those 65 and older say they began saving before they were 35.

According to Dave Willmer, executive director of staffing firm The Creative Group, more and more employees are taking advantage of of the freedom that comes with freelance careers. Many people are attracted to the flexible lifestyle that comes with a freelance career, but they may not realize just how accessible this career path is. An increasing number of companies are in fact hiring freelancers to supplement their core teams.
