Are the writing skills of recent college graduates adequate enough for success in business? Many employers actually find them inadequate. Many companies don’t have any type of training program that new hires are required to complete. A matter of fact, many companies don’t have training programs at all. A look at the job postings and you will see the experience requirements.
What happens if these new hires do not improve their writing skills? Do they lose their jobs? I am a college professor teaching Business Communication to juniors and seniors at a university. I would like to know the opinions of the readers of this blog.

Thinking of using CareerBuilder or Monster for your next recruiting activity. Since Careerbuilder is a partner with Tribune Newspapers, it’s likely that your local newspaper uses Careerbuilder as their online job posting service. So, if someone wants to look in the local newspaper for a job, and then goes online to that newspaper website, they will see your Careerbuilder ad.
It really does depend on the type of job that you are advertising. Some people have had better experience using CareerBuilder for their sales related and medical positions. Other people say that Monster is great for entry level positions. While still others say that Craigslist is best suited for those that are unemployed. With that said, Monster and CareerBuilder allow you to use any of their screening tools to process applicants. Craigslist is a no-frills classified site. CareerBuilder and Monster each have the option for employers to have the candidates answer questions that could screen them in, or out, of the selection process. If you don’t use them, you could be inundated with hundreds of unqualified applicants.

Many people search for their career position using primarily online sources. These methods have proven ineffective. I use my professional associations’ websites and my alma mater to no avail. I have determined that there is inefficiency in the current system of HR. I am now making it my objective to streamline HR processes. I understand that there are different systems for searching for candidates. I do not see the value of the system of outsourced HR, which I believe to be called headhunting if the firm is paid by the company and scam if they are paid by the job seeker before services are renderred. Job seekers should NEVER have to pay anything to work for an employer. This part of HR will be superfluous when I have finished this project, so improvements in this area do not seem to be necessary.

There are many so-called best practices out there in recruitment and selection. In some companies, HR is involved in the initial pre-screeing. In others, a representative from the HR department sits in on the second interview with the hiring manager. In most companies that I know, HR does all the usual background checks, drug screening, employment testing, etc. How many companies have moved to a process where the HR rep does the initial first interview, but the hiring manager and perhaps another manager conduct the 2nd interview?

Web designers are professionals who charge for their work. With that in mind, many professionals will not accept a project that offers peanuts for compensation. I was interviewing for a position of Human Resources Director for a nationwide retail company. During the interview, the job as it was described to me, made it feel as if this company was not a strategic partner with management. It appears that this human resources department was more of an administrative expert pushing papers and enforcing policy. It is not an unpopular view when it comes to the issue of HR having a “seat at the table” and focusing on HR being more involved in strategic planning. Someone asked me about this yesterday and I think they were surprised at my thoughts.
